We are almost done with the second week of school! Homework is being assigned a bit more consistently now, so I would like to make sure all students and parents are aware of the 5th grade team expectations.
Each month students are allowed one late/missed assignment with no penalty. It should be turned in the next day.
The second late/missed assignment will result in students attending study hall during lunch and recess.
The third late/missed assignment will result in students attending study hall during lunch and recess as well as the student calling parents to inform them it is their third homework notice.
The fourth late/missed assignment will result in a conference between parents, teachers and students.
I am,of course, hoping we do not get to that point.
Today's homework:
Reading: read 20 minutes (daily)

set of 8 dividers (due Tuesday, September 4th)
Math: Survey presentation (due Friday, August 31)

Another good day in room 16! We ended the day with a brief walk outside as we had a practice file drill. The students were very quiet and orderly both leaving and enterring the building. I knew they would be, of course.
A special thank you to all the students as they taught me a new game - "Wiggalow!" - especially PB for his patience as I practiced along several times!
Homework -
Reading - - read 20 minutes (daily)
Math - survey presentation (due Friday, August 31)
Social Studies - "Why study history?" typed paragraph (due Thursday, August 30)
Homework policy signed by both student and parent (due tomorrow, August 29)
Last Friday, during Math, we had a Marshmallow Challenge. Students were asked to build a structure out of spaghetti, string, masking tape and one marshmallow. The marshmallow had to be on top and still in one piece. Here are some pictures of their results!
As you can see, some were more successful than others! As the students know, we can learn from our mistakes. We will do the marshmallow challenge again in the near future. I am sure the results will be vastly different! (PS - I apologize for the two sideways pictures. I cannot figure out how to fix those! Those were the only ones left upright by the end.)

Discussion of the week!
An exciting part of 5th grade is the ability to learn a new instrument and participate in band. I know you are anticipating your time with Mr. Schraub; it is very fun getting to try all the instruments. Some of you already have an idea what you want to play.
This week, let's blog about that!
Are you planning on joining band? If so, what instrument do you want to play? Why did you pick that instrument? If you are not joining band, why have you decided against it?
Remember, the class blog is not required; it is not part of your homework. However, it is a great opportunity to "chat" with your classmates.
As you know, I teach piano. I started playing the piano when I was in 4th grade. What you may not know is that my second instrument was percussion. I joined the band in 8th grade when a percussionist dropped out of band right before a concert. The band director knew me. He knew I played piano and could read music so he asked if I would fill in for the concert. I did. I continued playing percussion through high school and college!
All three of my children were in band. Jen played clarinet, Lauren played french horn and Stephen played percussion. They all took piano lessons from me too! And now each one owns their own piano!

What a fabulous day we had! Today was the first day we switched for both language arts and math. I was delighted to hear how many of my students love reading. Many love to write; only a few said that it is pure torture.
In Social Studies we began our Explorers Unit. We had some fabulous discussions. The discussions are one of the best parts of 5th grade!
The math students did a great job working together on problem solving and then sharing their answers with the whole class. I really appreciate the stars and wishes the students shared with the presenters.
I am finding that the days just fly by. The students are truly fabulous!
Today's homework:
Language Arts: Read for 20 minutes (daily)
Personal Museum (due Friday - see handout)
Math: Computation worksheet. Remember to do both sides.
Social Studies:
1. Write a response to the essential question, "Why study history?" Directions are on Mrs. Sutton's Social Studies Discussion Page. Due Friday, August 24.
2. Write a response to a classmates blog, "Why study history?" Directions are on Mrs. Sutton's Social Studies Discussion Page. Due Tuesday, August 28.
3. Typed paragraph on, "Why study history?" Due Thursday, August 30.
Students will be getting a rubric/checklist for their typed paper.
**If you are not able to do this work at home, please make arrangements to do it before or after school or during lunch. Thanks!

We are finishing up our first full day of school. It has been great! My group of students are spectacular. We have talked over many classroom policies and procedures. The students have done a wonderful job of helping create a positive classroom environment.
Today's homework is for students to begin discussing the social studies essential question "Why study history?" There is a post on the social studies blog page, if you can access it. Students do not need to reply to the post today, though it is fine if they do. It will be an assignment later this week, once I am sure everyone can get on the blog.
Enjoy your evening!

Welcome to 5th grade! I hope you had a fabulous summer! I am very excited to work with you this year. Please tell me something you did this summer. I went to so many different beaches; beaches are one of my favorite places. I went to Florida, Michigan, Indiana and Chicago beaches this summer. I also went to Toronto but we didn't go to the beach there. It was super hot though. My family and I looked for the beach but it was too far away to walk to.
