Today we celebrated Kenya Connect.  The entire fifth grade class raised over $2000 to help Sophia Primary School in Kenya.  Congratulations to all the fifth graders.  We are very proud of them all!  To raise that much money, they read a multitude of books.
We spent time this morning traveling through stations, learning about Kenya. Mrs. Hurt shared her experiences and pictures of Africa.  Mrs. Lapham set up a Kenya marketplace in her room where students could experience the art of bartering.  Mrs. Yaniz taught all the 5th graders how to play Mancala and Mrs. Potempa helped them write a poem about Kenya.  I was in charge of recording it all in photographs.

Another great day in room 16!

We started a new read aloud today - Because of Mr. Terupt.  It is a great book!  I think they will really enjoy it!  They are finishing up a story quilt about our last book as well!

There are so many exciting things happening at this time of year, both in and out of school.
Tomorrow the entire fifth grade will have a book talk about the nominees for this year's Caudill books.  Mrs. Jakalski will give them a sneak peak Tuesday morning.
Thursday is our Kenya Collect day!  We will be celebrating how much the 5th graders read and how much money we were able to collect for Sophia Primary School in Kenya!  Stay tuned for the official total!
Math is beginning a short unit on 2-dimension figures. They will be creating a picture and story using 2-dimensional shapes.  They will also be classifying their shapes as a way to demonstrate their understanding.
Tomorrow is our Frank Lloyd Wright reception.  Parents of AT math students are invited to come to Schiesher tomorrow at 1:30 and see what the students created.  I hope you are able to join us!

Happy Friday!

Language Arts totally enjoyed their celebration day.  We had nachos with cheese, salsa and jalapenos with a movie and pajamas.  They sure know how to pack the fun in!  They were all very polite and thanked me several times.

After school, several girls stayed late to help me with a project.  Thanks to ZH, LH, AB, AD and BR.  They were super efficient.  What they did together in an hour would have taken me considerably longer.

There is a bit of work to think about this weekend.

Today we had the opportunity to listen to the 4th and 5th grade choruses preview their concert.  They will perform this evening, here at Schiesher.
The book fair is also open this evening.

I have a project I will be working on after school tomorrow.  Several students have asked if they can stay after school to help.  I can allow 4 students to stay and help - so the first 4 that have their parent contact me may stay from dismissal until 4:30.  I will need to know how the students will be getting home at 4:30.  Parents - you may blog or email me. Please include your phone number so I can call back to verify.  Thanks!  I really appreciate that they want to help!

We finished our 13 colonies glogster presentations today.  All of the students did a phenomenal job!  We are now working on the study guide in preparation for the test next week.
The students should be working on their 5-paragraph essay for social studies.  It is due tomorrow.
It is an opinion piece on why the 13 colonies were successful.  Students may refer to the social studies blog, where we already discussed the importance of rules and strong leadership.

Here's the actual assignment:

Social Studies

5 paragraph essay

In our blog, we discussed why rules are important and what makes a good leader.  Both rules and strong leadership led to the successful colonization of America.  What else do you think was necessary?

Write a 5 paragraph opinion essay.  Write about 3 issues that were a part of the success of the first 13 colonies.  You may use leadership and rules as two of your 3 ideas.  However, you may also use your own ideas.  I would suggest you reread the blogs to help substantiate your ideas about leadership and rules, should you decide to use those.

Your essay must begin with an introductory paragraph. In this paragraph, you must state your thesis as well as your main ideas.  The next three paragraphs must each focus on one of your ideas, with a minimum of 3 supporting statements or ideas. Be sure to use information from your social studies text as support.   Your final paragraph must restate your thesis  as well as your main ideas.  This is the traditional format for a 5 paragraph essay.

Your final copy must be typed, double-spaced, in an easy to read font with black ink only.  Remember to check for spelling, punctuation and capitalization.  Use transition words within your paragraph as well as to connect your ideas from one paragraph to another.

I have included a graphic organizer on the back side of this paper. I strongly suggest you use it to organize your paper.  If you prefer a different organizer, feel free to substitute that one instead.

Your paper is due on Thursday, December 6, 2012.
I have not attached the organizer but
